The AP Music Theory exam format
| Section | What's in it | Time | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Multiple choice | 75 questions | 80 min | 45% |
| Free response | Melodic dictation 1 (9 pts); Melodic dictation 2 (9 pts); Harmonic dictation 3 (24 pts); Harmonic dictation 4 (24 pts); Part writing from figured bass (25 pts); Part writing from Roman numerals (18 pts); Harmonization of a melody (9 pts); Sight-singing 1 (9 pts); Sight-singing 2 (9 pts) | 80 min | 55% |
How your score is calculated
Multiple choice: right answers ÷ 75 × 45%
Free response: your points ÷ maximum points × that part's weight
Composite = the sum, as a percentage of the maximum. The composite then maps to a 1–5 score.

College Board doesn't publish cutoffs. These are estimates; real cutoffs shift a few points from year to year.
How students scored in 2026
59% of students who took AP Music Theory in May 2026 earned a 3 or higher, and 18% earned a 5 (College Board score distributions).
Tips for more points
- Harmonic dictation and part writing carry most of the written points (24, 24, 25 and 18 of 118) — that's where practice pays off most.
- Melodic dictation gives a point per correct half-measure segment, so partial answers still score.
- In sight-singing, keep going after a mistake: hesitations and restarts cost the bonus point.

No. College Board sets the composite cutoffs for each score after the exam is graded and doesn't publish them. We use estimates based on released scoring worksheets and how generous each exam's score distribution is.
When do AP scores come out?
AP scores are released in early July in the College Board student account. Colleges you chose to send scores to receive them at the same time.
