The AP Seminar exam format
| Section | What's in it | Time | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Performance tasks and exam | Team project and presentation; Individual research report and presentation; End-of-course exam | 120 min | 100% |
How your score is calculated
Each part: your points ÷ maximum points × that part's weight
Composite = the sum, as a percentage of the maximum. The composite then maps to a 1–5 score.
Estimated score ranges
| AP score | Composite (estimate) |
|---|---|
| 5 | 66% and up |
| 4 | 52–65% |
| 3 | 38–51% |
| 2 | 26–37% |
| 1 | below 26% |
College Board doesn't publish cutoffs. These are estimates; real cutoffs shift a few points from year to year.
How students scored in 2026
88% of students who took AP Seminar in May 2026 earned a 3 or higher, and 10% earned a 5 (College Board score distributions).
Tips for more points
- Each essay is scored on a 6-point rubric: up to 1 point for the thesis, 4 for evidence and commentary, 1 for sophistication.
- The sophistication point is the hardest to earn; a clear thesis and well-explained evidence get you to 5 of 6.
- Multiple choice carries 45% of the score, so steady practice on passages pays off as much as essay drills.
