Estimate. The digital PSAT is adaptive and each test form has its own conversion, so the same number of right answers can land 20–40 points apart.

How to use it

  1. Enter right answers in Reading and Writing (out of 54) and Math (out of 44).
  2. Choose whether each second module was the harder or easier one.
  3. Read your total, section scores and Selection Index.

The formula

Total = Reading and Writing (160–760) + Math (160–760)

Selection Index = 2 × (RW ÷ 10) + (Math ÷ 10), from 48 to 228

Good to know

  • Only the PSAT/NMSQT taken in 11th grade counts for National Merit.
  • Commended and Semifinalist cutoffs change every year and differ by state.

Questions

What Selection Index do I need for National Merit?

Semifinalist cutoffs are set by state each year and have ranged from about 207 to 223. Commended Student recognition has needed roughly 207–210 nationally.

Why does Reading and Writing count double?

The Selection Index was designed when the PSAT had separate reading and writing scores. Doubling the combined section keeps the old balance.
