The AP CSP exam format
| Section | What's in it | Time | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Multiple choice | 70 questions | 120 min | 70% |
| Free response | Create performance task (video, program, written responses) (6 pts) | 60 min | 30% |
How your score is calculated
Multiple choice: right answers ÷ 70 × 70%
Free response: your points ÷ maximum points × that part's weight
Composite = the sum, as a percentage of the maximum. The composite then maps to a 1–5 score.
Estimated score ranges
| AP score | Composite (estimate) |
|---|---|
| 5 | 72% and up |
| 4 | 59–71% |
| 3 | 46–58% |
| 2 | 31–45% |
| 1 | below 31% |
College Board doesn't publish cutoffs. These are estimates; real cutoffs shift a few points from year to year.

Questions
What percentage of students get a 5 on AP CSP?
In May 2026, 10% of students scored a 5 on AP Computer Science Principles, and 63% scored 3 or higher (College Board score distributions).
How many multiple-choice questions can I miss and still get a 5?
With about 70% of the free-response points, our estimated curve puts a 5 at roughly 52 of 70 multiple-choice questions right — so you could miss about 18. The real cutoff moves a little each year.
What do I need to pass AP CSP (score a 3)?
With about half the free-response points, you'd need around 32 of 70 multiple-choice questions right for a 3 on our estimated curve — roughly 46% of the section.
Are these the official cutoffs?
No. College Board sets the composite cutoffs for each score after the exam is graded and doesn't publish them. We use estimates based on released scoring worksheets and how generous each exam's score distribution is.
When do AP scores come out?
AP scores are released in early July in the College Board student account. Colleges you chose to send scores to receive them at the same time.
