How to use it

  1. Enter each grade as a percentage.
  2. Enter its weight. Weights can be percentages (40) or any relative numbers (2 for double weight).
  3. The weighted average updates as you type.

The formula

Weighted average = Σ (grade × weight) ÷ Σ weights

Good to know

  • Weights don't have to sum to 100 — the calculator normalises them.
  • A simple average treats every grade equally; use the average grade calculator for that.

Questions

What's the difference between a weighted and a simple average?

A simple average adds the grades and divides by how many there are. A weighted average multiplies each grade by its weight first, so a test worth 40% counts four times as much as a quiz worth 10%.

Can I use points as weights?

Yes. If a test is 100 points and a quiz 20 points, enter 100 and 20 as the weights.
