Is a 4.2 GPA good?

A 4.2 is a weighted GPA — the standard 4.0 scale stops at 4.0, so a 4.2 means some of your classes are honors, AP, IB or dual enrollment with bonus points. It's strong — it means mostly A's with some honors or AP classes on top.

What it takes to have a 4.2

The same 4.2 can come from different mixes of grades and class levels. Share of your classes that need the bonus, by unweighted average, with the common +1.0 for AP and +0.5 for honors:

How colleges read it

Many colleges recalculate GPA with their own rules — the University of California caps honors points at eight semesters, and the University of Florida counts only core courses. Your school's 4.2 may come out higher or lower after recalculation, so it's worth checking the rules of the colleges on your list.

Questions

Is a 4.2 GPA good?

Yes. A weighted 4.2 is strong — it means mostly A's with some honors or AP classes on top.

What is a 4.2 GPA unweighted?

It depends on how many of your classes were weighted. With a +1.0 bonus for AP classes, a 4.2 could be straight A's with 20% of classes at AP level, or an unweighted 3.6 with 60% AP. Recalculate from your grades for the real number.

What is a 4.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale?

You can't convert it exactly without your grades: weighting adds points for class level, not for higher grades. Proportionally, 4.2 out of 5.0 is 3.36 out of 4.0, but your unweighted GPA is probably higher than that.

Can you have above a 4.0 unweighted?

No. 4.0 is the maximum unweighted GPA on the standard scale. Anything above 4.0 is a weighted GPA that includes honors, AP, IB or dual-enrollment bonuses.
